LADYWELL: Three Firecrests, two Cetti's Warblers, a House Martin, seven Swallows, a Kingfisher and a Tawny Owl. Bt

SALVINGTON: A Firecrest was still present along Offington Lane, a Sparrowhawk and a Buzzard over. Nick Bond

WORTHING: About 110 Goldfinches flew over my garden first thing while I had breakfast. I then realised the conditions looked fairly promising for a seawatch so walked down to the beach where I started a 2.5 hour session. Two Bonxies were the clear highlight, while 28 Kittiwakes was a reasonable total and six Common Scoters, a Dark-bellied Brent Goose and 171 Gannets also flew by. A Great Crested Grebe was on the sea. David Campbell

GORING GAP: A late morning visit to the Gap coincided with high tide. There was certainly an increase in gull numbers, though I've learned that when it comes to gulls locally, it is quantity or quality and rarely both! There were no standout species among the roost today but 27 Mediterranean Gulls made for my highest count for a while and 22 Great Black-backed Gulls was another notable number, while a total of 130 Common Gulls was another increase since my last check (though that was about a month ago now!). Around 15 Turnstones and a Ringed Plover were in the wader roost field. David Campbell

Several hundred Herring Gulls, with some Black-headed Gulls and a small number (3-5) of Common Gulls and Great Black-backed Gulls. A Grey Heron, motionless on the edge of the saltmarsh as I rode north was still in the same place when I returned an hour later. A couple of Chiffchaffs calling, and three Buzzards noted. Peter Chase via SOS

19th October 2020

CISSBURY RING: Cissbury Ring was the third destination for a rule-of-6 outing on a day of late cloud and light northerly winds which gradually improved to a fine late morning and afternoon. We had a quiet start and developed excitement in counting Woodpigeon! Sightings improved before we reached the Ring with a bright male Yellowhammer, a couple of Goldcrest and Turdidae that included Mistle Thrush and... Blackbird. Almost immediately upon entry into the fort we found a pair of Stonechat, the first of at least 6. A little further and we were busy watching busy birds erupting from Gorse and diving back again, or between trees. These included Yellowhammer (5), Goldcrest (2), Goldfinch (4) and Greenfinch (1). In the absence of further birds we developed an interest in the smell of Parasol (yeasty, perhaps like rising bread). But as we headed to 'The Yew', which was almost completely devoid of berries, a Green Woodpecker gave a brief departing glimpse. Leaving the fort to the south some saw a Chaffinch and more Stonechats put in an appearance. Looping round a couple mentioned they had seen a Kestrel and sure enough we had our first raptor. We found plenty of Hawk bits, beards and weeds but then scanning around I found a very striking Buzzard grooming itself in a tree. This was closely followed by the discovery of a very handsome male Kestrel in the top of a tree and a couple of Jays finally. Then another Turidae: a perfect Song Thrush which gave good views. The Kestrel clocked something flying over and got us onto a high flying Red Kite heading east. A male Pheasant was then added to our tally but then in the absence of avians we were distracted by Wall butterflies (2 male and 1 female) and discussions over a yellow Lucerne type (I have since consulted an expert botanist who confirmed this as a Tall Melilot). Eventually wending our way back to the car park we had Goldcrest (6) and questions whether another 'crest' was there, plus a couple of Long-tailed Tit. So a quieter than usual Cissbury Ring outing (I had 23 species listed whereas previous years have usually been 27) and of course a much smaller group but I think we all enjoyed some sociable birding and additional wildlife. Mark Wright via SOS

As the tide fell this afternoon an adult and a juvenile Sandwich Terns were flying back and forth between the Toll Bridge and the railway. Although they were often apart, over a ten minute period the adult successfully dived for small fish on three or four occasions, upon which the two birds joined one another on the water and the adult fed the fish to the juvenile. Suddenly the young bird attracted the hostile attention of a Black-headed Gull, which chased it at close range up and down the river for a couple of minutes before losing interest. Five Ringed Plovers flew upstream. A Cetti's Warbler singing intermittently near New Salts Farm. Steve Gilbert via SOS

Overhead passage involved my first Redwing of the autumn, seven Crossbills, at least eight redpolls, 12 Siskins, 30 Meadow Pipits, 50 House Martins, three Swallows and five Pied/White Wagtails. Three Ravens and a Sparrowhawk also flew over, a Mistle Thrush errupted from the trees and a male Stonechat was unusual below our ringing station. David Campbell

At Cissbury Ring 25 Stonechats counted in the area with a few Blackcap and Chiffchaff. Overhead a small number of Siskin and low numbers of Swallow and House Martin were on the move west. A late Spotted Flycatcher was the highlight sunning itself on the lower northeast slope. A Clouded Yellow butterfly was noted with a delightful Wall Brown. Bernie Forbes via SOS
