Rarities/Scarcities

Over the years many interesting birds have turned up locally in the Worthing area - here is a quick photographic guide to some of those records. (In progress)

Desert Wheatear - Worthing's Splash Point (Nick Bond)
This bird attracted many admirers from near and far as it spent a few days on Worthing's seafront in October 2012. Splash point is just east of Worthing's famous pier and occassionaly attracts Wheatears and Black Redstarts in the autumn as they feed up on insects along the rocks stacked up there. This bird was very confiding and often fed around your feet...a real character!

Desert Wheatear - Goring Gap (N.Bond)
10 years later history repeated itself with a spring record found by Stephen Simpson whilst doing his WEBS count at Goring Gap on the 22nd March 2022. Being a sunny Sunday afternoon, the beach was busy, but the news was put out in plenty of time for many local birders to enjoy this rarity. The following morning there was no sign...a one afternoon wonder!

Glaucous Gull - Goring Gap (photos : Nick Bond)
This bird arrived at the gap in February 2015 and remained fairly loyal to the site for at least a month, often seen roosting in the roadside fields and patrolling the beach going for the odd trip to Shoreham

Iceland Gull - Goring Gap - 2018 (photos Nick Bond)
Having initially been seen off Climping, it was not long before this bird dropped into the gull roost at Goring and despite going missing for a few days after its initial appearance, the bird became a regular visitor around high tide although was not keen on mouldy bread or bagels!! Top bird and many visited to connect with this stunner which was later hanging out around the Shoreham area

Great-Spotted Cuckoo - Brooklands Park - (Nick Bond)
This bird attracted birders from far and wide during its stay in April 2005. The photo above shows it feeding on the nearby golf course and this photo was taken old-skool digiscoping with the classic Nikon coolpix 4500

Snow Bunting - Goring Gap - October 2013 (photos Nick Bond)
Snow Buntings are always a delight to sea and we have been lucky along our area to attract these winter visitors pretty much annually. Birds have been seen over the years along the stretch between George V Avenue in Worthing and Bluebell Cafe in Ferring. This one was photographed at Goring Gap in 2013, with another one here in December 2016, December 2018 and January 2019

Waxwings - Goring 2009/Durrington 2013 (Nick Bond)
In good influx years we have fared petty well in the area for Waxwings, in 2009 we were treated to a small flock of Waxwings which would be seen feeding on berries near Goring train station and were once the berries were running low the birds were observed fly-catching from nearby trees and were seen leaving to roost up on highdown gardens. In 2013 a bigger flock (upto 32 birds) were feeding on a small berry tree outside Durrington junior school on Salvington road well into March that year

Great-grey Shrike - December 2019 (M.Galtry)
This bird was a nice find up on Cissbury Ring, remaining for several days, a very rare visitor to our area

'Northern' Treecreeper - Patching (D.Campbell)
December 2019 produced this British rarity near Patching Pond found by David Campbell (nominate form familiaris), the bird proved very popular with locals and birdwatchers from further afield

Scaup - Widewater - January 2011 (Nick Bond)

2 birds were present throughout the month mainly frequenting the eastern lagoon

Pallas's Warbler - Brooklands Park (Chris and Juliet Moore)
This gem of a bird graced Brooklands Park in November 2018 having  been found by Paul and Gareth James, the bird remained for several days but was always tricky to connect with

Woodlark - Goring  - January 2013 (Nick Bond)

At least 3 birds were found just west of the Sea Lane café during a cold snap, several birds were also displaced at Shoreham airport
