About/Contact

Welcome to our blog covering all bird and wildlife sightings around Worthing, West Sussex. We hope to encourage others to enjoy the wildlife that surrounds our town and share sightings. The area boasts many promising sites, though few get much attention from birders.

Please feel welcome to share your sightings and photographs by emailing worthingbirding@gmail.com

Worthing Birding area: this map shows the area we cover (everything within 10km of Worthing Pier) and the location of some key sites within the boundary

Local birder Mike Galtry kindly supplied this link which may help people not too familiar with the area some site names mentioned on the sightings and inspire some of you to explore these areas!

Over time, we hope to build a guide to some of our interesting local sites to explore, with information on access, species to look for and some of their past glories.

Note, however, that the blog does not act as an official record-gathering system, so we strongly encourage all contributors to also make their sightings available to the BTO via their BirdTrack system, or submit them to the Sussex Ornithological Society, so that the data are available for posterity and conservation.

The Blog Team :

Nick Bond - Living in the area now for just over 10 years, I have enjoyed the potential of our local sites in Worthing and the birds and wildlife on our doorstep. Initially, I struggled to find a 'local' patch, and I do tend to stick local these days but will always be tempted by anything rare/scarce at any Sussex/National sites.
I love photography and have also enjoyed getting to know the local butterflies and specialities the nearby south downs have to offer. I was also photographic editor of the Sussex Bird Report between 2010-2015 and hope photos on this blog represent the quality of local wildlife we have here in Worthing

Gareth James - Moved to the Worthing area in October 2017. I work as an assistant ecologist for The Ecology Consultancy, based in Lewes, East Sussex.

I am experienced with both breeding bird and wintering bird surveys as well as various other protected species surveys. I have also written a county guide to birding in West Sussex for Birdwatch Magazine.

David Campbell moved to Worthing in October 2017, is a member of Rare Bird Alert's news team, as well as working as a freelance guide and consultant, and sits on the Sussex Ornithological Society's Records Committee.
