SALVINGTON: A Hobby was seen after a mid afternoon shower shortly followed by a single House Martin bombing eastwards, a Red Kite was seen over the High Salvington area, 57 adult Starlings were busy collecting food on the football pitches at Durrington Rec, surely on a matter of time until we see the first fledgling (NB)

WEST WORTHING: Five Common Scoters, 22 Gannets, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, a Whimbrel and seven Sandwich Terns (Bt).

WIDEWATER LAGOON: Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel and Dunlin, plus Fulmar offshore and two Mute Swans (SOS).

ADUR ESTUARY: Knot, four Bar-tailed Godwits, four Whimbrel, Dunlin, Shelduck, two Oystercatchers and two Little Egrets (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARKThe usual Blackcap , Cetti's and Reed Warbler in song plus a yaffling Green Woodpecker. 3 Willow Warbler with one bird showing really well. On the beach little movement noted with a few distant Gannet and Sandwich Terns. On the lake the adult Mute Swans were proudly protection their buoyant 7 fluff balls. With initially a single House & Sand Martin dropping into feed there were a little later around 8 House Martin and a couple of Swallows (BFF). Two Cetti's Warblers, 10 House Martins and two Sand Martins (Bt).

FERRING RIFEJust south of country centre 2 Reed Warblers, a Willow Warbler and a Reed Bunting (KH).

SHOREHAM: Long-eared Owl flew in off sea and inland this morning. Willow Warbler singing at end of Dolphin Road (SOS). Also 16 Common Scoters, Whimbrel, 25 Sandwich Terns, two Arctic Skuas and 25 Gannets (Bt).

SOUTHWICK BEACH: BLACK-THROATED DIVERPALE-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE, 10 Kittiwake and a Rock Pipit (Bt). 

WEST WORTHINGWillow Warbler was singing enthusiastically in the garden this morning, while an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull which landed on a rooftop was soon seen off by the local Herring Gulls, the Magpies were still maintaining their nest (they've been gathering mud from below the leak in the garden pond) and a Coal Tit was singing distantly. In the evening, when we popped to the shops, the adult female Peregrine was seen (DKC).

ADUR ESTUARY: Two Whimbrel and five Turnstones (SOS).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Five House Martins, two Swallows and a Willow Warbler. Two Whimbrel and eight Sandwich Terns on beach. Mute Swan with seven cygnets (SOS).

GORING GAP: Two Great Crested Grebes, three Sanderlings, five Turnstones, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, a Swallow, a Mallard and three Sandwich Terns (Bt).

LANCING: Wheatear (Bt).

SHOREHAM FORT: Wheatear (SOS).

WIDEWATER LAGOON: Two BLACK-THROATED DIVERS (one summer plumaged bird flew east at high tide and one on the sea early morning), plus Arctic Skua and 13 Bar-tailed Godwits past. Bar-tailed Godwit and Whimbrel still on lagoon, two Redshanks, two Oystercatchers, three Little Egrets, a Mute Swan, five Mallards, four Sandwich Terns and two Gannets (Bt).

ADUR ESTUARY: Five House Martins, two Cetti's Warblers, two Reed Warblers, a Sedge Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Grey Heron, two Little Egrets, three Swallows and a Reed Bunting (Bt/SOS).

BROOKLANDS PARKMy stroll around Brooklands this morning was once again very enjoyable.In the northern end of the park, formerly Worthing Rubbish Dump ,2 Common Whitethroats were holding territory.Elsewhere Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldfinch and Greenfinch were doing the same. Little of note on the old golf course, crossing over to the beach  I was greeted by a beautiful calm sea. Scanning around there was no movement with just the usual Herring Gulls loafing around.Around the lake 2 Reed Warbler and the male Reed Bunting in song. At least 6 House Martins and lone Swallow  were feeding over the lake plus a very confiding Grey Heron. The usual Cetti's were belting out their song. Above the stream the bubbling call of a Garden Warbler was heard ,eventually rewarded with good close views (BFF). harrier sp in off sea this morning (SOS).

CISSBURY RING: Two Lesser Whitethroats (Bt).

COOMBES: Whinchat (RBA).

THE DOWNS (Steep Down to Cissbury): Cuckoo, 35 Corn Buntings and a Red Kite (Bt).

GORING GAP: There were 9 Great Crested Grebes on the sea and in the distance a Great Skua sitting with a couple of Great black backed Gulls. Three Whimbrels dropped in and five Sandwich Terns were patrolling the shoreline. The highlight was a POMARINE SKUA trundling its way eastwards. Otherwise it was worryingly quiet for this date with no passerines coming in (RI)

PATCHING: Single Hobby and 2 Swallows (RI)

SALVINGTON: 2 Peregrine Falcons together (RI) 2 Swallows flew north over Durrington rec, our resident Dunnock family has increased to 4 birds with 2 newly fledged birds frequenting the garden (NB).

STEYNING: At least one Nightingale singing, two FirecrestsMarsh TitCuckooGarden Warbler, Cetti's Warbler and Marsh Tit (Bt).

WEST WORTHING: I heard a Yellow Wagtail flying over the garden early morning. After a singing Stock Dove being around the garden for a few days, it was pleasing to see a pair on one of the rooftops this morning. I can't think where they'd try to nest here other than in a chimney (DKC).

24th April 2020

ADUR ESTUARY: BLACK-TAILED GODWIT still by airport along with a Greenshank (SOS). Also two Reed Warblers (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Not much in the way of migration,stunning Green Woodpecker feeding on the ground and singing Coal TitCommon Whitethroat holding territory in the scrub near the railway line. The usual BlackcapSong ThrushCetti's and Goldcrest all singing. The old golf course held little just a few Goldfinch and 2 passing Swallows whilst overhead 6 adult Med Gulls flew east. From the beach the sea was very quiet except for a handful of loafing Sandwich Terns and 2 Med Gulls east. The usual suspects around the lake with a Reed Warbler singing with a pair of Reed Bunting holding territory (BFF).

FERRING: Three Bonxies on the sea off Ferring at 1p.m. flew off east at 1.30. Another five Med Gulls went past (CH).

FINDON PARK FARM: Lesser Whitethroat (Bt).

GORING-BY-SEA: Five probable POMARINE SKUA at 17:09 (RBA). Also an Arctic Skua, 22 Brent Goose, a Collared Dove, six Common Gull, 66 Common Scoter, 14 Gannet, a Great Skua, a Little Egret, a Mediterranean Gull, 20 Sandwich Tern, a Swallow, a Whimbrel and a Yellow Wagtail.

ADUR ESTUARYMid-afternoon, tide falling. Two BLACK-TAILED GODWITS on the eastern shore and almost directly opposite on the other side three Whimbrels feeding in the saltmarsh. A Little Egret by the Toll Bridge. A Reed Warbler and a Willow Warbler singing opposite Ricardo's entrance, and nearby a Common Whitethroat. Several Blackcaps. A Grey Heron flew low over the airfield. Another Reed Warbler and Common Whitethroat singing near the Dog's Trust (also Orange-tip butterfly). A (dead, sadly) Hedgehog on the Upper Shoreham Road, the first I've seen for a long time (Steve Gilbert via SOS).

SHOREHAM: GREAT WHITE EGRET flew east at 8.55am, plus four AVOCETS and 290+ Mediterranean Gulls (RF).

SOMPTING DOWNS: Three Corn Buntings and a Mistle Thrush, plus two Mallards (Bt).

UPPER BEEDING - SMUGGLER'S LANE (borders): Teal, three Cetti's Warblers and Garden Warbler (Bt).

WEST TARRING ALLOTMENTS: Female Sparrowhawk (Bt).

ADUR ESTUARY: Two Shelducks. a Whimbrel. six Sedge Warblers, a Reed Warbler, a Cetti's Warbler, two Grey Herons, six Little Egrets, a Reed Bunting and two Oystercatchers (Bt).

ANGMERING: HOOPOE at Palmer Road sports field in afternoon (SOS).

BRAMBER BROOKS: Two Sedge Warblers, Reed Warbler and three Cetti's Warblers (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: My walk this morning around Brooklands was fairly quiet although I missed the best birds. Earlier on in the morning John Dodd had a flock of 7-8 CROSSBILLS fly out from the conifer trees in the park moving off west. I saw and heard 4 Cetti's and 2 Reed Warblers, Blackcap and Chiffchaff with a few Swallows moving inland. Off shore very little moving in the cool NE wind save for a few Sandwich Tern. A lone Swift flew over. Remarkable numbers of Red Admirals in the northern end of the park and cute baby Coots being fed by the adults.
Back home 2 Red Kite and a Common Buzzard drifted north east (Bernie Forbes via SOS).

EAST WORTHING: Two Wheatears, a Swallow and a Red Kite seen in East Worthing this morning heading east towards Brooklands Lake area (SOS).

MILL HILL: Nightingale singing at north end in morning (SOS).

PATCHING HILL: 10 Blackcap, two Common Buzzard, a Chiffchaff, two Firecrest, five Goldcrest, two Greenfinch, a Jay, a Lesser Whitethroat, two Skylark, two Song Thrush, a Stock Dove and two Yellowhammer (Bt).

SHOREHAM: Two SLAVONIAN GREBES offshore (RBA).

STEYNING-CISSBURY RING: A start at first-light, and the walk along the Monarch's Way was interesting as usual, with several each of Linnets, Yellowhammers, and Corn Buntings (flock of 35+ on the way back) plus pair of Stonechats, 3 Grey Partridges, and plenty of Skylarks singing. No major fall of migrants at the Ring, but a close group of 5 Wheatear bucked the trend, and best sightings otherwise were single Marsh Tit, 2 further pairs of Stonechat and 2 Lesser Whitethroat. A Peregrine was causing havoc among the Woodpigeons on the way back, and surprised to note my first Wall butterfly of the year in the cool NE wind. Nine Brown Hares on the way out and two sightings on the way back (Ray Baker via SOS).

UPPER BEEDING FLOOD RELIEF: Cetti's Warbler and Common Sandpiper (Bt).

WEST WORTHING: At home, my first two Swifts of the year flew east, one of the Peregrines was around and the Blackcap was in song (DKC).

WORTHING: Five Greenshanks east at 6.50am, 11 Whimbrel, 21 Turnstones, a Shelduck, two adult Mediterranean Gulls, nine Sandwich Terns, 12 Gannets and six Linnets (SOS).

ADUR ESTUARY: BLACK-TAILED GODWIT still, four Whimbrel, a Yellow Wagtail, a Shelduck, a Cetti's Warbler, a Reed Warbler two Oystercatchers, a Little Egret, a Lesser Black-backed Gull and 25 Common Gulls (Bt).

ANGMERING: Yellow Wagtail (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Reed Warbler, Cetti's Warbler, Willow Warbler and Mallard with nine ducklings. Nine AVOCETS, five Common Terns, 20+ Whimbrel and three or more Curlew, two Sandwich Terns, a Swift, two Swallows and two House Martins  offshore (SOS).

CHURCH HILL, FINDON: Three Mistle Thrushes, a Whitethroat and a Swallow (Bt).

EAST PRESTON: Spotted Flycatcher (GDM).

WEST WORTHING: Two Greylags, a Fulmar, four Common Scoters, four Whimbrel, three Shelducks, 12 Sandwich Terns, 12 Common Gulls and 17 Gannets (Bt).

WIDEWATER LAGOON: A Little Egret and an Oystercatcher (Bt).

WORTHING BEACH: Two Yellow Wagtails, two Bar-tailed Godwits, a Whimbrel, 22 Gannets, 11 Sandwich Terns, two Common Scoters, a 2cy Kittiwake, a Mediterranean Gull and three Common Gulls (SOS).

RIVER ADUR: I rode my bicycle up the Adur river beyond Upper Bedding starting when was still dark. Great birding, highlight was pair of Garganey on flooded meadow up the river - my first record in Sussex! Also two singing Nightingales up there (didn't hear them last year), one Cuckoo and hooting Tawny Owls and Barn Owl in flight. Singing Stock Dove also there. In Shoreham Shelduck, 4 Whimbrels and Black-tailed Godwit and bit further also Common Sandpiper and Green Sandpiper. All the way up quite a lot of Linnets (more then last year) and Greenfinches and some singing Yellowhammers. Sedge Warbler was also recorded as well as Cetti's Warbler, both in Upper Beeding. There were also Red Kite and Corn Buntings close to Lancing and 2 passing Mediterranean Gulls (Shemi via SOS - unsure whether e.g. Garganey in our area or not).
By bike along Coombes Lane to Cuckoo Corner, returning via the airport road and Norfolk Bridge. A rather windy mid-afternoon wasn't ideal for hearing bird song, although Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and Skylarks, among others, were noted. Three Mute Swans at Cuckoo Corner, and a couple of Swallows flew through to the north. Along the river, one Shelduck, two (possibly three) Whimbrels, four Oystercatchers, a lone Lapwing and a Little Egret (Steve Gilbert via SOS).

DURRINGTON: Whinchat and Wheatear at Holt Farm bridleway just north of A27; also Grey Heron. Garden Warbler singing at Goring Castle (SOS).

ADUR ESTUARY: Greylag Goose, Shelduck and Whimbrel by tolbridge this morning (SOS).

Singing Cetti's and 2 Willow Warbler. Around the stream 4 Blackcap,single Stock Dove and 2 Greenfinch. In the blackberries at the back of the park, a single Common Whitethroat (Bernie Forbes via SOS).

FERRING: SHORT-EARED OWL flew east early morning.

ADUR ESTUARY: Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Whimbrel and two Shelducks (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Another visit to Brooklands this morning before the welcome rain. Green Woodpecker 'yaffling' and a Coal Tit singing, maybe 2 pairs in the park? Four Blackcap on territory plus a few Chiffchaff. Still a good number of Goldfinch and Linnet around, I guess some are migrants and other may stay to breed? Goldcrest and 3 Song Thrush in song. Four Cetti's Warbler around the lake & stream belting out their call. Six Swallows hawking insects over the water plus 2 Reed Warbler singing from the islands. Six Mediterranean Gulls were in a tight flock going west high, alerted by their deep call. Offshore 20 Sandwich Terns going east as were 40+ Gannets much further out (Bernie Forbes via SOS).

THE DOWNS: My walk today was along the Monarch’s Way to No Man’s Land and towards Cissbury Ring in dismal conditions, two Swallow (pic lower left) and single Common Whitethroat and Chiffchaff the only migrants, just one Corn Bunting along the path (top left) and a flock of ca.40 feeding in an arable crop where also pairs of Stock Dove (pic top right) and a pair of Red-legged Partridge (lower right). Also a pair of Stonechat and two of Linnet (Alan Kitson via SOS).

GORING GAP: A Great Northern Diver, 171 Sandwich Tern, 64 Common Tern, four Little Tern, 267 Gannet, two Mediterranean Gull, a Red-throated Diver, four Ringed Plover, eight Common Scoter, 26 Whimbrel, four Great Skua, four Brent Geese and singles of Arctic Skua and Bar-tailed Godwit. Also 104 Turnstone, 25 Oystercatcher, three Swallow, two Wheatear, three Blackcap, two Chiffchaff, two Grey Heron, three Skylark, a Whitethroat and a Treecreeper (Bt).

LANCING: Morning ride to work brought 3 Gadwall on the sea at Lancing along with one Gannet, 2 Sandwich Tern, 2 Curlew and also 2 passing Linnets. And 4 Mediterranean Gulls over Shoreham (Shemi via SOS).

SOUTHWICK BEACH: Four Sandwich Tern (Bt).

WEST WORTHING: Just the singing Blackcap of note during breakfast at home this morning. The local Peregrine pair were seen while shopping in the early evening (DKC).

ADUR ESTUARY: BLACK-TAILED GODWIT and Bar-tailed Godwit both still from tollbridge (SOS). I was able to go to the river and, just north of the railway bridge, found three godwits together, feeding in the river margin, although against the light they were two Bar-tailed Godwit (one, Richard’s one, a full red male, the other probably also male but less red and with a straighter bill) and yesterday’s BLACK-TAILED GODWIT (Alan Kitson via SOS).

BRAMBER BROOKS: Cuckoo, Sedge Warbler and Cetti's Warbler (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Common Sandpiper, Reed Warbler, four Wheatears (beach), several Willow Warblers, two or more Cetti's Warblers, a Reed Bunting, 10 Oysterctchers, several Sandwich Terns, a Gannet and a Great Crested Grebe (SOS).

CISSBURY RING: Two Mistle Thrushes, a Willow Warbler, five Whitethroats, three Stonechats, five Yellowhammers, three Meadow Pipits, a male Kestrel and a Lesser Black-backed Gull (Bt).

GORING GAP: In three hours (combined separate watches): Mediterranean Gull 112 E (several good flocks), Sandwich Tern 74 E, Brent Goose 18 E, Whimbrel 15 E, Arctic Skua two E (at 5.30 this afternoon) and Kittiwake two E. A single Bar-tailed Godwit flew W this afternoon and there were three Great Crested Grebes on the sea (CH). In afternoon pale morph Arctic Skua, two Arctic Terns, Common Tern, 25 Sandwich Terns, 65 Mediterranean Gulls, 25 Whimbrel, 20 Bar-tailed Godwits, 32 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, a flock of Common Scoters and six Swallows (GDM).

FINDON: Two Firecrests and a Yellowhammer (Bt).

HIGHDOWN: Two Red-legged Partridges, a Lesser Whitethroat, two Canada Geese, a Grey Heron, a Willow Warbler, two Bullfinches and six Yellowhammers (Bt).

MILL HILL: A Nightingale singing at the bottom of the Mill Hill LNR slope this aternoon. Sadly it didn't sing for long. Hoping it will stay rather than merely drop in on migration (Chris Corrigan via SOS).

NORTH GORING GAP: Two Sedge Warblers, a Little Egret and two Reed Buntings (Bt).

SHOREHAM: SERIN and adult ICELAND GULL (RBA).

SLONK HILL: Male Whinchat, nine Wheatears, a Yellow Wagtail, 10+ Whitethroats, three Stonechats and three Corn Buntings (SOS).

STEYNING DOWNLAND SCHEME: Nightingale singing, Cetti's Warbler, Reed Warbler, Mallard with 13 ducklings, two Whitethroats, a Yellowhammer, a Firecrest, two Linnets, two Whitethroats and two Yellowhammers (SOS).

WEST WORTHING: Two Sand Martins low east over the garden first thing were my first of the year and a Blackcap was singing (DKC).

SALVINGTONAlthough very likely to be part of the Knepp introduction scheme, it was still nice to see 4 White Storks over Durrington rec today before thermaling northwards towards Findon, they were were earlier seen over Littlehampton and Rustington, the fine weather also produced a Peregrine over, 5 Buzzards and a Red Kite. A Yellow Wagtail was also seen heading north overhead at 8am, good selection of springtime butterflies around too (NB/NO)

WEST WORTHING: Birding at home first thing was quiet again, with a Blackcap, a Linnet and two Lesser Black-backed Gulls the best on offer during breakfast (DKC).

SALVINGTON: Garden birding today, Red Kite drifted over, 4 Buzzards, female Sparrowhawk , Grey Heron flew over Durrington rec just after 8am, a Swallow also flew north not long after. 154 Herring Gulls and 2 Lesser black-backed Gulls were feeding up on the football pitches at dawn. Brimstone, Orange Tip, Speckled Wood, Peacock, Red Admiral and Comma butterflies were seen enjoying the warm spring sunshine (NB)

WEST WORTHING: At home, the Blackcap sang and a Coal Tit popped in, then a Cormorant flew east (DKC).

ADUR ESTUARY: Whimbrel, Greenshank, Curlew, 23 Turnstones, two Teal, two Mute Swans and an adult Mediterranean Gull (SOS).

BRAMBER BROOKS NR: Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Little Egret, Sparrowhawk, Stonechat, Sparrowhawk and Buzzard (Bt).

CISSBURY RING: RING OUZEL still on west slopes.

THE DOWNS (No-Man's-Land area): HEN HARRIER.

FERRING RIFE: A Swallow passed through heading North other birds noted included two Linnet and singles of Song Thrush and Chiffchaff. Also three Willow Warbler and three Blackcap (Bt).

GORING: HOOPOE appeared in a different garden today (SOS).

GORING GAP: The biggest surprise of the morning was three EGYPTIAN GEESE that flew south through the Gap and then headed out to sea and shortly after two Mute Swan were swimming east close inshore! Grounded migrants were thin on the ground this morning with just three Blackcap, two Chiffchaff and a Meadow Pipit being noted and overhead five Linnet flew east. Other observations included 15 House Sparrow, 10 Greenfinch, three Chaffinch, three Skylark, six Dunnock and a Jay was in the plantation. Offshore 12 Mediterranean Gull, 4 Sandwich Tern and a Cormorant flew east whilst a Dark-bellied Brent Goose headed in the opposite direction. On the beach were 12 Turnstone and six Oystercatcher. Also two Whimbrel east and two Swallow (Bt).

HIGHDOWN: Three Yellowhammers and two Nuthatches (Bt).

KINGSTON GORSE: A Little Egret passed overhead and a female Sparrowhawk headed east along the beach (Bt).

LAMBLEY'S LANE: Two Red-legged Partridges and a Mistle Thrush (Bt).

SHOREHAM: Wheatear, three Sandwich Terns and three Mute Swans (Bt).

STEYNING RIFE RANGE: Two NIGHTINGALES singing (RBA).

WEST WORTHING: Two Meadow Pipits, a Linnet and a Stock Dove flew over the garden. The Blackcap was in song and Jay and Coal Tit each paid a visit (DKC).

FERRING RIFE: Highlights this morning included a singing Sedge Warbler near the caravan park which showed itself briefly. Also 12 Willow Warbler, eight Chiffchaff, a singing Goldcrest and two adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in a ploughed field to the west and eight Mediterranean Gull passed overhead to the east. Between the Bluebird Cafe and Goring Gap were 20 Turnstone and a Sanderling on the beach whilst two Sandwich Tern passed close inshore to the west and there were two Gannet further out. Also Tree Pipit, Whitethroat, 15 Willow Warblers and eight Chiffchaffs (Bt).

GORING-BY-SEA: A Common Buzzard flew over the flat just before midday and the singing Blackcap is still in the communal gardens below the balcony (GJ). Also male MARSH HARRIER flew west, two Tree Pipits over, six Whimbrel west and four Swallows (Bt).

GORING GAP: There were three Meadow Pipit in the rough field whilst birds noted in the eastern plantation included a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Jay and a singing Stock Dove. In the holm oaks on the northern boundary of the gap was a singing Blackcap and a Coal Tit. Also 2cy Little Gull, four Mediterranean Gulls, 12 Sandwich Terns, two Gannets, 21 Sanderlings, 11 Turnstones, two Lesser Black-backed Gulls, three Oystercatchers, two Willow Warblers, three Blackcaps and two Chiffchaffs (Bt).

LANCING: Grey Partridge, Sparrowhawk, some Corn Buntings and Stonechats and a Red Kite to the north of Lancing (SOS).

SHOREHAM: Sandwich Tern off beach (Bt).

UPPER BEEDING: Three House Martins (Bt).

WEST TARRING ALLOTMENTS: Two Willow Warblers (Bt).

ADUR ESTUARY: BLACK-TAILED GODWIT by ropetackle this morning (Helen Wiggins via twitter). Also Greenshank, Curlew, 20 Turnstones, a Mute Swan, three Mallards and 13 Oystercatchers (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK: Two GADWALL, Cetti's Warbler, Arctic Tern, Sandwich Terns, two Dark-bellied Brent Geese, a flock of Common Scoters, two Great Crested Grebes and a few Gannets (SOS).

CISSBURY/SOMPTING: 2 RING OUZELS (Bt)

COTE STREET: Willow Warbler (Bt).

FERRINGSandwich Tern c. 55 E, Common Tern one close E, Little Gull two E, Gannet 8 E, Common Scoter at least 40 E plus other distant ducks that I suspect were Shovelers, Brent Goose two E (CH)

GEORGE V AVENUE: Totals from seawatching this morning included: Brent Goose 124E, Shelduck 1E, Common Scoter 242E, Sandwich Tern 142E, Gannet 150+ E, Commic Tern 19E, Mediterranean Gull 41E, Dunlin 13E, Velvet Scoter 7E, Red-breasted Merganser 4E 1W, Arctic Tern 4E, Avocet 1E, Shoveler 25E, Oystercatcher 1E, Little Gull 22E, Teal 4E, Wigeon 1E, Red-throated Diver 1E 1os, Gadwall 3E and Great Crested Grebe 1os 2W. Passerines noted included a male Wheatear on the beach, Linnet 2E 1W and c30 Starling on the beach (Bt).

GORING GAP: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen arriving off the sea and headed inland mobbed by gulls (GK) 57 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Terns, 6 Little Gulls, 20 Gannets, 6 Mergansers, 1 Red throated Diver, 18 Gannets, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Turnstones, 35 Common Scoters (RI). Also two Treecreepers (Bt).

SHOREHAM: SHORT-EARED OWL flew inland; also four Purple Sandpipers still on jetty at harbour, a male Wheatear and a littoralis Rock Pipit. Three Swallows over a garden (SOS).


SOMPTING: Swallow (Bt).

WEST WORTHING: The best overhead today were a Linnet, a Cormorant, four Black-headed Gulls and two Stock Doves. Nocmig picked up a Redwing overnight (DKC).

ADUR ESTUARY: Whimbrel and Curlew, two Shelducks and a Black Swan (SOS). Also 30 Turnstones and seven Oystercatchers (Bt).

BROOKLANDS PARK (seawatch): Six Eiders, 35 Common Scoters, 74 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, two Shovelers, a Red-breasted Merganser, a Sandwich Tern and an Oystercatcher all east, and an additional Dark-bellied Brent Goose flew west; plus a Great Crested Grebe and three Turnstones (SOS).

CHURCH HILL: Mistle Thrush, two Red-legged Partridges, a Kestrel and a Yellowhammer (Bt).

CLAPHAM (Richardson's Wood): Mistle Thrush, Nuthatch and Blackcap (SOS).

DURRINGTON CEMETERY: A Marsh Tit was seen again this morning, this time just on the outside of the cemetery, also a Firecrest, fly over Linnet and Raven and 2 Green Woodpecker, singing Chiffchaff and Blackcap (NB)

ERRINGHAM FARM: Corn Bunting (Bt).

FERRING/GORING: 6 Wheatear, 2 Willow Warbler, 16 Chiffchaff and 10 Blackcap being the highlights (GK)

GORING: The bird of the spring so far was a HOOPOE that was in a garden in Goring, seen for around 15 minutes before flying off west, not far from Alinora Avenue so worth checking if your local to the area. Thanks to Roy Bower for the report and photographs

LAMBLEY'S LANE: Two Shelducks, a Mistle Thrush, a Kestrel, five Buzzards, 20 Skylarks, 20 Pied Wagtails, 20 Greenfinches and four Yellowhammers (Bt).

SALVINGTON: A Buzzard over, Chiffchaff, a few Meadow Pipit over north, Small White, Peacock, Red Admiral butterfly and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in my garden (NB)

SOMPTING ESTATE: LITTLE RINGED PLOVER (SOS).

SHOREHAM: Six Great Crested Grebes off beach (Bt).

WIDEWATER: Adult BLACK-TAILED GODWIT (Dave Hoggen). Also three Little Egrets (Bt).

WEST WORTHING: Nocmig picked up a flock of Common Scoters over at 3.06am. Over the garden this morning were 33 Meadow Pipits and three Linnets, while a Chiffchaff was new in and Blackcap was in song (DKC).

WORTHING: 4 Gannets offshore, 14 Common Scoter east, 6 Mediterranean Gulls east, a Red-throated Diver, 4 Cormorants east, a Fulmar west and a Seal offshore (Bt)
