7.05-8.50am highlights: LITTLE GULL, 17 Mediterranean Gulls, 17 Red-throated Divers, three Sandwich Terns and 100+ Gannets. The latter mostly flying west the rest east. All gulls adults. 

13 EIDERS east offshore

A reasonably quiet seawatch between 10:50 and 14:20 included singles only of Red-breasted Merganser E, Sandwich Tern E, Shelduck E and auk sp. E. At least one Great Crested Grebe feeding close in offshore and a Gannet flying around repeatedly near the Rampion windfarm. A Ringed Plover was heard calling nearby on the beach. As usual on the Widewater lagoons two Redshank, three Little Egret, two Mallard and 2 Mute Swan. Notably since my last visit several weeks ago, the Teal were no longer present on Widewater (unless hiding very well). James Alridge via SOS

ADUR ESTUARY: My regular circuit by bike got off to a good start with a Common Seal swimming north on the rising tide under the Tollbridge. In this vicinity were one Grey Plover, one Curlew, two Oystercatchers and about a dozen Redshanks. Two Buzzards overhead. A Reed Bunting singing near New Salts Farm. South of the main road there were six Teal, a pair of Mallard, one Greenshank and at least 30 Redshanks. The rising water began to make a few Snipe move around but I left well before high tide. ADUR ESTUARY: 8.20am an AVOCET was on the Adur opposite the airport but at 9.05am it was seen flying up river and north over the A27. It wasn't present at Cuckoo Corner although 11 Mediterranean and four colour-ringed Common Gulls were. The latter three Norwegian and a German.

THE DOWNS (near Lancing): Three Sand Martins flew north and hundreds of Meadow Pipits; also mixed flock of 70 Fieldfares and Redwings, a Red Kite, Corn Buntings and Stonechats. Shemi via SOS

GORING: We watched 08.45 to 12.30 in a moderate WNW wind. Movement of Meadow Pipits quite brisk from 10.00: 

Red-throated Diver 1E, Fulmar 1W, Great Crested Grebe 15 offshore, SHAG 1W with 2 Cormorants, Cormorant 3W 1E, Brent Goose 27E, Red-breasted Merganser 30E, 23E, 8 on sea, Grey Plover 3E Black-headed Gull 2W 3E,  Common Gull 9W 2E, Great Black-backed Gull 4W, Meadow Pipit 564NW, Wheatear 3NW and Greenfinch 1W. GORING: A slow watch off Goring this morning between 08.45 and 11.00 ind in a very strong ESE wind: Red-throated Diver 2W, Fulmar 2W, Brent Goose 5E, Common Scoter 3E, Red-breasted Merganser 9W, 7E and Black-headed Gull 16E. Dave Smith and Dorian Mason

MARINE GARDENS: A brief look at the sea this evening was quite rewarding.  Between 17:10 and  17:40 290 Brent Geese flew E (1,25,55,c200,20). This I’ve seen before at this time of year birds departing with a following wind and before some grim weather sets in. Loads of gulls but mainly coming onto the sea to roost rather than moving; otherwise just 4 Red-breasted Mergansers E, 3 Oystercatchers W and a couple of parties of waders heading up into the heavens going east. MARINE GARDENS0845-0945 and watched a millpond like sea with very little moving and not even an interesting grebe to get excited about!. John Newnham

     Late morning there were 45 Red-breasted Mergansers on the sea and a Red-throated Diver flew east. Two Sanderlings and a Turnstone were along the beach and a Peregrine flew over. David Campbell

PATCHING POND: A female Shoveler was on the pond early morning. Ralph Simpson, a little later 4 Buzzards over and 2 of each Canada and Greylag Geese

PATCHING SEWAGE WORKS: A YELLOW-BROWED WARBLER was found by Clive Hope at lunchtime, the bird showed well around the sewage work perimeter fence and called just a few times. A Firecrest was also showing well and there was a good number of Chiffchaff and Goldcrests in the area. Three Grey Wagtails also noted here and at least two Redwings.
