CISSBURY: 2 Lesser Whitethroats & 4 Spotted Flycatchers in hedge at north end of golf course along track leading up from Findon Valley, Redstart & 4 Spotted Flycatchers along track east of Cissbury. Also 4 Brown Hairstreaks (2m 2f).

GORING: 2 Ravens flew over west early morning

LANCING RING: 2 Grasshopper Warblers

MILL HILL: 2 Spotted Flycatchers in area plus Yellow Wagtails and Sand Martins over

FERRING: two Whinchats and 12 Wheatears in Ferry Country Centre big paddocks. Pied Flycatcher by egret roost (16 Little Egrets). Kingfisher upstream of bridge by country centre. Later on 8 Yellow Wagtails, Common Redstart, Whinchat and 6 Wheatears in paddocks

GORING: Two Ringed Plovers and a Sanderling on  beach. Also a few Swallows flying E.

BROOKLANDS PARK: this morning 1 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 Swift, 1 Common Sandpiper heard, 6 Willow Warblers. A female Common Redstart was by the stream in the evening.

GORING GAP: A Whinchat around the rough area, 4 Sandwich Terns west, 50c Mediterranean Gulls loafing offshore. In the evening there were 2 Whinchat and 2 Wheatears

FERRING RIFE: A late morning stroll from the Country Centre across to Kingston Lane and back was very quiet to start with but picked up a bit on the way back.
Species seen were:  Wheatear 2, Spotted Flycatcher, Whitethroat 3, Blackcap, Willow Warbler 5, Chiffchaff, Swallow 9 and a Buzzard.

HIGHDOWN: Late afternoon -  2 Spotted Flycatcher, 30 Yellow Wagtail, Garden Warbler, Whinchat, Wheatear, 10 Swallows, 4 Sand Martin, 2 Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Tree Pipit and 2 Willow Warbler. Also 2 Mediterranean Gull over E, Raven, Bullfinch, Kestrel and 2 Stock Dove.

SOMPTING VILLAGE: 20 House Martins

ADUR ESTUARY: A adult Yellow-legged Gull, Greenshank and a Whimbrel

ANGMERING: Another OSPREY flew west over Downs Way at 4.30pm

BROOKLANDS PARK: We took part in the Bees and Seas event organised by the Friends of Brooklands Park, leading several walks to show participants the wildlife of the park. Reed, Sedge, Willow Warblers and Blackcaps were seen around the stream area, a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull, an adult and 2 juvenile Great-black backed Gulls, 1 adult and 2 juvenile Lesser-black Backed Gulls, a Cormorant and a Little Egret were seen at the lake. A good selection of butterflies and dragonflies were also noted including a Southern Hawker. Thanks to all that joined us today

CISSBURY RING: 3 Common Redstarts and 5 Tree Pipits overhead, Clouded Yellow and 2 Brown Hairstreak butterflies also noted. 2 Lesser Whitethroat at flint mines, Common Redstart on NE side, also Willow Warblers 10+ & Whitethroat 6+.

GORING GAP: 2 Wheatears, 53 Turnstones, 29 Ringed Plovers, 2 Yellow Wagtails, Curlew 1W, Redshank 1W, Sanderling 2W.

MILL HILL: 5 + Tree Pipit, Common Redstart, Reed Warbler plus Willow Warblers.

PATCHING HILL: 1 Common Redstart, 1 Whinchat, 1 Garden Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, nice flock of c150 Linnets.

SHOREHAM: OSPREY flew over north east at 12.30

ANGMERING: A OSPREY was seen flying west over Downs Way just after 9am and was picked up over Rustington too just afterwards. 

LADYWELL: Amongst the birds trapped today were two Lesser Whitethroats; none were ringed in Ladywell last year and a total of only 41 have been ringed in the valley. Perhaps the most interesting feature was the appearance of six Garden Warblers. Just 98 have been ringed in Ladywell since 2007 and never have six been trapped in a day with five days with four individuals. Below I a table of birds trapped and ringed

ADUR ESTUARY: 1 Whimbrel, 27 Ringed Plovers, 3 Dunlin opposite airport.

ANGMERING: 3 juvenile Shelduck flew west over Downs Way

DURRINGTON: A Peregrene Falcon flew low over Columbia drive at 3pm

GORING GAP: Knot, Whimbrel, 4 Ringed Plover and 4 Turnstone on beach. Also singles of Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Warbler and 5 Swift over west. By mid-morning there was no sign of the Knot and Whimbrel but Turnstone numbers had increased to 65. A Stock Dove and 2 Common Gull were also noted

15th August 2021

ADUR ESTUARY: 23 Ringed Plovers, 8 Dunlin and a Whimbrel opposite the airport. Also 2 Mediterranean Gulls (ad + juv) and a Sandwich Tern.

GORING: Not a lot on a seawatch this morning, 6 Common Scoters E, 31 Gannets W, 2 Whimbrels W, 10 Sandwich Terns W, & 2 Mediterranean Gulls.

14th August 2021

ADUR ESTUARY: 2 Greenshank, 8 Whimbrel, 3 Common Sandpipers, 23 Redshank, 2 Mediterranean Gulls (separate ad & juv).

ANGMERING: A Willow Warbler and a Painted Lady butterfly in a private garden on Downs Way

CISSBURY RING: Common Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 7 Willow Warblers

LADYWELL: Ringing-  the table below shows a good range of species but, apart from Whitethroats, in considerably fewer numbers.  Willow Warblers, as expected in August, topped the ‘chart’.  

 



SHOREHAM: 12 White Storks were reported over the skies north of Shorebam, very likely to originate from the Knepp scheme

GORING GAP: A SOOTY SHEARWATER was seen lingering offshore before disappearing thought to have landed on the sea, further searches failed to re-locate the bird. 6 Mediterranean Gulls were on the sea, 3 Swift went east and 3 Sandwich Terns west.

11th August 2021

BEEDING / TRULEIGH HILLS: 2 Common Redstarts, Whinchat, 26 Wheatears, 11 Willow Warblers, Lesser Whitethroat & 17 Whitethroats, 11 Swifts, 8 Sand Martin’s, 4 Ravens & 15 Corn Buntings.

CISSBURY RING: 5 Wheatear, 16+ Willow Warblers and at least 4 Whitethroat in weedy fringes along main track north of Cissbury, between Monarch Way crossroads and Findon gallops turn off. Another 20+ Willow Warblers around the Flint Mines.

NEPCOTE GALLOPS: 6+ Swallows and two Wheatears, also 1 Tree Pipit, 2 Buzzards and 25 House Martin’s this morning.

SOMPTING: A Raven over Lambleys Lane

WEST WORTHING: 3 Wheatears on the beach in the morning

ADUR ESTUARY: 17 Ringed Plover, 1 Dunlin

CISSBURY RING: 3 Wheatear -Nepcote Gallops & 2 Clouded Yellows along track leading east towards  No Mans Land. 1 Common Redstart and 15 Willow Warblers in the area. 
Three Redstart (including this really close one below) on the north side where there was also a Sparrowhawk that narrowly missed catching a juvenile Green Woodpecker. Also a Peregrine in the area and increasing numbers of Willow Warbler.

FINDON GALLOPS: A  stroll this morning up to the Gallops looking for migrants was dominated by Whitethroats (15-20), Greenfinches and Goldfinches. Also seen were a few Yellowhammers, three or four Wheatears, a Redstart, a Stonechat, three Blackcaps and two Willow Warblers with half a dozen Swallows over the top of the hill. 

STEEP DOWN: Sand Martin 7, Swallow 3, Willow Warbler 4, Blackcap 1, Whitethroat 11, Stonechat 2, Corn Buntings 34.

FERRING: A seawatch this morning (0830-1000) was disappointly quiet with just 9 Sandwich Terns W, 10 Gannets E and 7 W, one Curlew W, 3 Oystercatchers W and a few Cormorants but was considerably enlivened when the screaming of gulls above caused me to look up and see a splendid OSPREY, flying quite low at 0840, making its way eastwards along the coast. CISSBURY RING: 10 Willow Warblers, 8 Blackcap and 6 Whitethroats. Juvenile Stonechat near the cabbage patch

STEYNING BOWL: At least 3 possibly 4 QUAIL calling in the area between 8 and 9pm, heard in the areas marked with the pin-point and red dots. 3 Painted Lady butterflies also along Monarchs Way and good number of Corn Buntings

ADUR ESTUARY: A Black-tailed Godwit, a Greenshank, 2 Whimbrel, a Common Sandpiper, 3 Ringed Plover and 60 Turnstones

CISSBURY RING: A juvenile Whinchat in the cabbage field next to the car park, a few Willow Warblers, Blackcaps and Whitethroats

FINDON GALLOPS: 2 Redstarts, 2 Wheatears and a Clouded Yellow butterfly

GORING GAP: 2 juvenile Greenfinch by the pumping station which also hosted 3 Willow Warblers and 2 Whitethroat. A family party of 5 Whitethroats were on the eastern side, a Little Egret flew over west and 2 Swifts over the plantation



2nd August 2021

ADUR ESTUARY: 9 Egyptian Geese and a Common Sandpiper

ANGMERING: 2 Crossbills flew north over Downs Way and Willow Warbler in garden

CISSBURY RING: 50+ Swallows No Mans Land & QUAIL calling on Monarchs Way NW of New Hill Barn TQ158100. Also 4+ Willow Warblers at Flint Mines.

GORING GAP: On the beach at 0900 were 16 Turnstones, 3 Ringed Plovers and  7 Little Egrets. 7 Oystercatchers and 5 Mediterranean Gulls flew W and a single Gannet E . This pm an adult Common Gull was on the greensward with Black-headed Gulls.

STEEP DOWN: A single QUAIL still

ADUR ESTUARY: A Greenshank, 3 Whimbrel, at least 2 Common Sandpipers and 3 Dunlin still in the area. More unusual was the sight of 2 Canada Geese

DURRINGTON: A single Swift over Durrington Hill mid morning

FERRING: Common Sandpiper, 15 Swift's over, Willow Warbler, 5 Whitethroat

GORING: Seawatch - A Great Skua and 2 dark morph Arctic Skuas west this morning

GORING GAP: 4 Sanderling, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Little Egret and handful of Turnstones on beach this afternoon. Also Painted Lady and 2 Hornet Mimic Hover Fly

SALVINGTON: Plenty of screaming Swifts could be heard at dusk over Rogate Road but too high up to see, so perhaps parties of departing birds rather than local breeders

WEST WORTHING: Juvenile Grey Heron east over Boundary Road, also on the moth front a Plumed Fanfoot trapped overnight
