ANGMERING: HOOPOE at Palmer Road sports field in afternoon (SOS).
BRAMBER BROOKS: Two Sedge Warblers, Reed Warbler and three Cetti's Warblers (Bt).
BROOKLANDS PARK: My walk this morning around Brooklands was fairly quiet although I missed the best birds. Earlier on in the morning John Dodd had a flock of 7-8 CROSSBILLS fly out from the conifer trees in the park moving off west. I saw and heard 4 Cetti's and 2 Reed Warblers, Blackcap and Chiffchaff with a few Swallows moving inland. Off shore very little moving in the cool NE wind save for a few Sandwich Tern. A lone Swift flew over. Remarkable numbers of Red Admirals in the northern end of the park and cute baby Coots being fed by the adults.
Back home 2 Red Kite and a Common Buzzard drifted north east (Bernie Forbes via SOS).
DURRINGTON CEMETERY: A Whitethroat was on territory on the new area, 4 Buzzards were over the A27 (NB)
EAST WORTHING: Two Wheatears, a Swallow and a Red Kite seen in East Worthing this morning heading east towards Brooklands Lake area (SOS).
GORING: Buzzard over garden early afternoon (SOS).
GORING GAP: Five Greenshanks, Garden Warbler, House Martin, 14 Whimbrel, 35 Turnstones, a Wheatear, two Willow Warblers, a Treecreeper, eight Oystercatchers, five Sandwich Terns, two Meadow Pipits, a Gannet and a Whitethroat (Bt).
MILL HILL: Nightingale singing at north end in morning (SOS).
PATCHING HILL: 10 Blackcap, two Common Buzzard, a Chiffchaff, two Firecrest, five Goldcrest, two Greenfinch, a Jay, a Lesser Whitethroat, two Skylark, two Song Thrush, a Stock Dove and two Yellowhammer (Bt).
Firecrest at Patching Hill |
SHOREHAM: Two SLAVONIAN GREBES offshore (RBA).
STEYNING-CISSBURY RING: A start at first-light, and the walk along the Monarch's Way was interesting as usual, with several each of Linnets, Yellowhammers, and Corn Buntings (flock of 35+ on the way back) plus pair of Stonechats, 3 Grey Partridges, and plenty of Skylarks singing. No major fall of migrants at the Ring, but a close group of 5 Wheatear bucked the trend, and best sightings otherwise were single Marsh Tit, 2 further pairs of Stonechat and 2 Lesser Whitethroat. A Peregrine was causing havoc among the Woodpigeons on the way back, and surprised to note my first Wall butterfly of the year in the cool NE wind. Nine Brown Hares on the way out and two sightings on the way back (Ray Baker via SOS).
